In Doha, it’s a common sight to see people strolling down to the harbor, captivated by the dhows – enchanted by their graceful movements, their serenity, and their profound connection to Qatari culture. To me, these vessels symbolize more than just tradition; they embody memories and heritage.
“Dhow Conversation” serves as a contemplation on how the past remains intertwined with us, even when we attempt to confine it within the confines of a box. I aimed to fashion an installation that would encourage the audience to introspect in a tranquil manner.
Every sound within this composition is intricately linked to my emotions and experiences with dhows, meticulously recorded aboard these boats or during public events. Some of these sounds traverse across multiple speakers, fostering a sense of dialogue between the frames. Meanwhile, overhead, a sonic ambiance, crafted from the resonance of boat hulls at sea, immerses the audience within the piece.
Constructed with a wooden frame and a sound mirror, which resonates with the dhows’ conversations, these four sonic sails pique curiosity and inspire viewers to contemplate their own reflections and memories.
The creation of this installation brought me into collaboration with a diverse group of local craftsmen, enriched by visits to the Dhow Section of Qatar Museum, a major wellspring of inspiration.
Beyond being a mere sound sculpture, this piece represents a significant chapter in my artistic odyssey in the Middle East.
“Dhow Conversation: Sonic Sails 1” came to life during my residency at Doha Fire Station in Qatar, spanning from 2018 to 2019. Its realization was made possible in part by the support of the Fire Station, an affiliate of Qatar Museums.
